We want to do our bit, so we are going to Walk the Walk

Stepping out for society

As a society, it's important to support each other. We all bring different skills to the table and even for those who do not have the qualifications to achieve a societal ambition, we can do other things to support that aim.

And that is what we will be doing when we take part in the Walk the Walk expedition in May.

Normally, Walk the Walk takes place in London but we will have to imagine when we are walking past the landmarks.

Walk the Walk is a fundraising operation that gives grants to other charities and organisations to help them reach the united goals and ambitions of treating breast cancer.

Under normal circumstances, the event takes place overnight in London and we decided to sign up for the 2020 event, which would have taken place last May.

But, what with one thing and another, it was cancelled but we opted to leave our entry fee with them so we could take part this year.

Prior to it being cancelled, we set about a training programme several months before the due date. This involved walking around the lanes of East Devon together, which had the added advantage of having some good quality family time.

And even though the event was cancelled, we continued to go out for walks together, but with the adjusted purpose with no specific aim, other than enjoying each other’s company.

Our training walks will take place in the lanes of East Devon, as will the real thing with the Virtual Walk the Walk Challenge.

Taking on the challenge

Now in 2021, we are set to take part, but with slightly different aims as we will not be travelling to London to see some of its great landmarks at night and feel the support of the gathered crowds. Instead, on the Walk the Walk Virtual Challenge, we will be following our own route around the lanes of East Devon, which we are in the process of calculating to ensure we cover the right distance.

As an added incentive, we intend to take account of the original route and where the landmarks would have been. So when in London, we would have been passing Tower Bridge, for example, instead we will have a virtual Tower Bridge in our minds, as we walk past a field gate that is held closed by a piece of string.

We'll miss the crowds

There is no doubt that this will add to the challenge as I am sure the good wishes from onlookers would have spurred us on as we made our way through the night.

But regardless, we will set off on May 15, to walk through the night on our 26.2-mile route to raise funds for Walk the Walk.

It’s a challenge we are looking forward to and one we are already in training for – come rain or shine.

All donations will go to Walk the Walk, to go towards tackling cancer.

We want to do our bit for society by raising money for this worthy cause and would welcome any donations that people would like to make.
